We see a focus around the brands patented 'Three-In-One Kompact Technology' and slim cut 'Shark Fit', resulting in resistant and low-pilling garments with a streamlined silhouette: not your average knitwear. Our favourite throw-over for this season is the Paul & Shark Blue Knitted Half-Zip Sweater, combining classic styling and bold colour, alongside the signature Paul & Shark badge.
A cornerstone of the 'Yachting' collection is the brand's range of Paul & Shark Shirts: constructed from soft touch woven cotton and sporting button-down kent collars, the quality is in the details. Paul & Shark History
With over 90 years of prestigious history behind it, Paul & Shark is one of Italy's most respected menswear brands, designed for those who desire top quality clothing with subtle and understated style. The brand was founded in 1971 by the Dini's, an Italian family who had started a textile business - the 'Dama S.P.A' - in the 1920's. The business, still based in their textile manufacturing facility in Varese (North of Milan), initially specialised in luxury knitwear, producing designs for European couture houses such as Balenciaga and Dior.
By the 1960's, a new division had been introduced to the factory, with a focus on the development of sportswear fabrics. It was this division that developed into Paul & Shark as we know it today, and that eventually resulted in the loss of Dama S.P.A's outside production, enabling them to focus solely on their own brand.
The story goes that on a sailing trip to Maine in the early 1970's, Paul Dino stumbled across an old sail from a clipper boat in one of the sail yards. On that sail were the words 'Paul & Shark'. Given that one of the words referred to his birth name, Paul saw it as an immediate sign for the name for his family's clothing brand: Paul & Shark was born.
Alongside research into technical sportswear fabrics, the brand has also remained dedicated to a 'concept to completion' approach to clothing production. Unique to Paul & Shark when it was introduced, and still in place to this day, this method ensures that every element of the brand's product, from the yarns used to create garments to the packaging they are delivered in, is manufactured in Italy under one roof, and delivers exceptional quality.
In the development of their unique technologies, Paul & Shark focused on three main factors crucial to seafaring knitwear: waterproofing, pilling resistance, and machine wash-ability. This resulted in '3 in 1 Kompact Technology': three threads are twisted into a yarn and compacted, resulting in a resistant, low-pilling and machine washable fabric that is 100% wool. This patented technique is used in all Paul & Shark knitwear, ensuring it is stylish yet perfect for seafaring use.
Another patented technology is 'Typhoon 2000' - a treatment ensuring high waterproof and windproof performances through an extra thin membrane, which prevents water drops from permeating the fabric. Although the membrane has high breathability, 1cm2 of treated fabric can resist a 20m high column of water, and very strong wind gusts.
The Paul & Shark range as we see it today is the culmination of over 90 years of prestigious history and experimentation, together with classic Italian design. The brand's initial target market towards, and inspiration from, the world of yachting has expanded over the years into skiing, golf and non-sportswear clothing, but still retains its seafaring core. This is reflected by lines such as 'Competition', designed with the new generation GP42 sailing yacht in mind.
Today, we see many high performance technical materials, many of which are patented, across not only knitwear but a full lifestyle wardrobe for both men and women, being sold in over 400 stores worldwide.
